Abstract

235,295. Round, H. J. March 10, 1924. Vacuum tubes.-A thermionic cathode consists of a cylinder of parallel wires or mesh supported at one end by a conducting disc carried by a conducting axial stem, and at the other end by a conducting support slidably or adjustably mounted on the stem. As shown, parallel wires 3 are connected at one end to a metal disc 2 supported on a stem 1, and at the other end to a spider 4, which is slidably mounted on the stem and insulated by a sleeve 5. The wires are kept in tension by springs 6 connected between lugs 7 on the spider and insulators on pins 8. The stem is mounted in a socket 12 on a cap 11. The spider is connected with a metal ring 13 spaced from the cap 12 and an anode 16 by glass cylinders 14, 15 fused thereto. A grid 17 is secured to a cap 18 spaced from the anode by a glass cylinder 19. In a modification, the joint between platinum rims on the ring 13 and the disc 11 is formed by a glass ring of circular section. In another arrangement, the wires form part of a helix and are intermeshed, and the spider is clamped to the stem by a screw.
