Abstract

A flood barrier includes two brackets (3) which are permanently screw-fixed to the styles of an external door-frame (2) at ground level. When in use a plywood board (4) slides in a downward direction between the two brackets to block the doorway. The board has ribbed, rubber sealing strips (figures C and D) which are fitted to the bottom edge and to both sides of the inner edge by means of self-adhesion and/or staples. The barrier is fitted between the two brackets with the sealing strips facing the door and held in place by means of three bolts (figure D). The bolts are tightened to compress the sealing strips at the sides of the barrier and downward pressure compresses the seal on the base so that the joints are watertight.

Description

HOMECARE FLOOD BARRIER.
Description/Function.
A device that is fixed to the external door frames of properties in areas of flood risks.
It consists of two galvanized brackets, marine quality plywood, sealing strips fixed to the reverse side of the plywood, all heldin place - under compression - by the s/steel bolts.
The two brackets are screw-fixed to the door frame legs. They can be painted/stained to match the frame and left in position permanently. The board is slipped into the grooves in the brackets (with the sealing strips facing the door) . Downward pressure will seal the base, tightening of the bolts seal the door frames.
When not in use, the board takes very little store space.
Description to be used with the drawing.
A) Barrier in situ.
al) Door.
a2) Door frame.
a3) Galvanized brackets screw-fixed to frame.
a4) Marine quality plyboard (the barrier).
a5) Door cill/threshold.
B) Components.
bl) Barrier.
b2) Bearing plates, to carry the preassure from the bolts.
b3) Retaining screws to bearing plates and to brackets.
b4) Bracket.
b5) Access holes for screwdriver to reach fixing screws.
b8) S/steel bolts to apply pressure to barrier.
b7) Nuts brazed ont brackets to utilise with bolts.
C) Reverse view of barrier.
c19- barrier.
c2) sealing strips(rubber). Two edges and bottom of barrier.
O) Section of sealing strips.
dl) Stapes fixed into grooves in rubber strip [if required).
d2) Enlarged section showing the sealing grooves that are fixed facing outwards. The strip has a strong, self adhesive back.
Note Sizes of the brackets and barrier are according to the requirements of the individual property.
Modern houses have a standard 840mum width door requiring a standard 880mm barrier to be fitted. Standard height will be 600mm.
If a Really high flood level is imminent, a second barrier and brackets can be fixed above the first.
