Abstract
232,692. Miller, H. C., and Callinan, J. Jan. 25, 1924. Odometers.-In an odometer adapted to be applied to the hub of a motor-vehicle &c. wheel, the fixed spindle k of the disc g upon which the counting mechanism is mounted, is made of a length equal to at least four times its diameter in order to prevent oil from creeping along it and obscuring the reading, and a stuffing-box s is provided around a groove u for the same purpose. The outer casing a which is screwed or bolted to the wheel hub has screwed into it a driving member h into the central bore of which are fitted two packing glands m, o surrounding the spindle k. An eccentric 20 mounted on the end of the plug m actuates the pawl 25 of the counting-mechanism through a strap 22 and a pin 23. The spindle k is resiliently connected to the fixed stub axle 6 by a disc t pinned to its reduced end k<2>. This disc carries a plate 4 having bent and slotted arms 10 adapted to be engaged by projections on a disc 5. Pins or projections 13 on the disc 5 are arranged to engage a slot 14 in a collar 15 on the axle 6, and a tapered coiled spring 17 is provided between the plates 4, 5. A ball-race v is arranged between a steel washer z housed in a recess in the member h and a case-hardened race 1 formed on the disc t. The arrangement of the projections 13 may be modified.
