Abstract

494,106. Resilient drives. DODD, R. P. C., BRAMAH, H. P., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 20, 1937, No. 11305. [Class 80 (ii)] Resilient driving means for a vehicle wheel 1 comprises a driving member 6, with arms 7 extending into the wheel and having slidable engagement with spring units recessed within the wheel so as to lie wholly or partly within its axial limits, each spring unit comprising a housing 12 removably secured to the wheel and accommodating a pair of aligned abutment members 18 having a limited outward movement under the action of a spring 20 or system of springs. The whole of the spring 20 is utilized for torque transmission in either direction of rotation, so that the wheel may have a relatively small diameter for a given resiliency. As shown the arms 7 have bifurcated ends carrying removable bearing pads 10 for engaging the abutment members. The latter are thimble-shaped, and have flanges 19 engaging retaining rings 17 screwed into housing 12 to limit their outward movement. Each housing 12 is accommodated in a recess 15 in a spoke 2, and has integral lugs 13 by which it is bolted in position. Driving member 6 carries a gear ring 8 by which it is driven, and is mounted in an end of a quill 5 surrounding the wheel axle 3. Specification 473,839 is referred to.
