Abstract

231,061. Shipley, C. M. July 17, 1924. Couplings, discon - nectible; with valves and cocks. - A coupling valve, applicable for transmitting liquid fuel from one aeroplane to another while in flight, comprises two couplings parts, one of which contains the valve, which is opened by and locked to the other part. One of the coupling parts 10 is provided with a transverse perforated plate 15 having a depending sleeve 17 which is integral with a screwed plug 18 having a conical mouthpiece 20. A sliding tubular valve 23 fits into the sleeve 17, and carries an annular weight 27 to maintain it in its lowest position so that the openings 31 are out of register with the openings 30. The valve 23 carries spring catches 34. The other coupling part 11 pushes the valve upwards, and the catches 34 engage in the groove 37. A pivoted disc valve is mounted on the spindle 38 and is normally kept closed by the spring 46 by means of the rack and pinion 41, 40. When the coupling is engaged, the sliding disc 42 is forced downwards by the flared opening 20, and the disc valve is opened. When fully engaged, the catch 50 enters a groove 21 to lock the coupling, and the catch may be released by a cord attached to the lever 51.
