Abstract

294,337. Bowden Wire, Ltd., and Nisbet, A. H. June 2, 1927. Actuating mechanism. - A valve 13, Fig. 1, for controlling the supply of petrol or the like on motor-vehicles is actuated by Bowden-wire mechanism which is adapted to be locked in inoperative . position by means of a padlock or the like which is actuated by a key or is in the form of a permutation lock, a hollow cylindrical gauze filter 25 being arranged in a chamber 24 separate from the valve chamber 14. Petrol enters the chamber 14 past the valve through an inlet 10 and flows through passages 22, 23 into the lower end of the chamber 24, whence it passes upwardly through the filter 25, the upper end of which is closed, into passages 30, 31 leading to an outlet 11. The base of the filter is pressed against a shoulder 28 in the chamber 24 by a spring 27. The valve is adapted to be opened against the pressure of a spring 15 by a rod 16 passing through a packed cap 44, the outer end of the rod being formed as a sleeve 33 against the end of which one end of the sheath 47 of the Bowden cable abuts. The other end of the sheath is received in a recess 52 at the inner end of a sleeve 51 slid able in a flanged sleeve 53 mounted on the dashboard. A spring 39 is arranged between a flange 37 on the sleeve 33 and a ring 38 screwed on a sleeve 40 screwed in the cap 44. The cable wire 36 passes through the sleeves 33, 51, the inner end being provided with a stop 35 engaged in slots 34, 42 in the sleeves 33, 40 and held by the ring 38, while the other end is provided with a stop 49 engaging a slot 50 in the sleeve 51 and being held in a recess in the outer end of the sleeve 53. To open the valve, a head 56 on tin end of the sleeve 51 is pressed inwards. whereby the sheath 47 is moved while the wire 36 is held stationary, and the valve is retained in open position by rotating the head 56 so as to cause a pin 57 on the sleeve 51, which normally engages a slot 59 in the sleeve 53, to enter a recess 58 in the end of the sleeve 53. To lock the parts in the inoperative position, the hasp 61, Fig. 6, of a padlock 60 is fitted between the head 56 and the sleeve 53.
