AUTOMATIC GAS-CONTROL VALVE.
Application filed October 30, 1920. Serial No. 420,802.
`To all whom t may concern Be it'known that we, Piiinir BENvissU'ro and LEUIGI MoMEARUzzo, subjects of the King of Italy, and residents of 65 Bank.
Street, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Au tomatic Gas-Control Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic pressure control devices.
Its primary object is to provide a simple, effective and easily operable device of this kind which may be readily applied at the termination of one, or between two conduits conveying gaseous or liquid media.
Another important obj ect of our device is to provide means whereby parts thereof may `be regulated so as to check the flow of such media entirely, or permit them to either freely pass through the conduits or through automatic pressure *controlling means.
The above and further objects will be more fully apparent from the' following description and the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a preferred form vof. my device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view therethrough taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 isa similar view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, with the cut-ofi' member removed.
Figs. 5 and 6 are cross sectional views- Within its cylindrical body a wall or bottom 11 is shown which is provided with one larger opening 12 and a smaller opening 13 (see Fig. 4) the centers of which lie at a circular distance on a circle indicated at 14.
Rotatably mounted within the housing and revolving upon wall 11 is a cylindrical cut-off member 15 provided with a uniform longitudinal bore 16 and another bore 17 which is reducedv at its lower portion. These bores are disposed diametrically opposite each other, and their centers lay on a circle of the same diameter as that of circle 14.

Fastened in the body of cut-off 15 is a handle'20 which protrudes through slots 18, and whichamay bekept in any of the three positions by means of the notches, as will be explained later.'
Within bore 17 is provided a valve 21 comprising a substantially cylindrical hollow body with a conical seat which registers with aperture 13. Valve 21 glidably fits the lower, reduced bore portion, while it leaves a free space around its outer surface when elevated into the upper, venlarged bore por* tion. l
` By means of handle 20, cylinder 15 may be turned within the housing, to three different positions as has been said above.
When in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 bore 17 registers with aperture 13 while aperture 12 is closed by the cut-oif body.
In Figs. 5 and 7 another position is shown where bore 16 registers with aperture 12, while aperture 13 is closed.
To close both apertures` cylinder 15 is positioned in the manner illustrated in Figs.
When applied in connection with a con` duit, 'for instance a gas line. our device may be attached near or.at the end of a burner. l
For use during hours when the light may be readily watched the cylinder 15 is yturned in position illustrated in Figs. 5 and 7. per- `is lowered so that it can not keep the valve mitting the free flow of gas through aperture 12 and bore 16.
During nighttime, and particularly when only a small flame is to burn, cylinder 15 is turned in position of Figs. 2 and 3. By so doing valve 21, now within the reduced portion of bore 17, is caused to glide upon wall or bottom 11 of the housing, and before it reaches a v`position perpendicular above aperture 13, gas is permitted to enter through the latter into borev 17 and under the valve, which is forced upward into the enlarged bore portion,as indicated in broken linesL in Fig. 2. p j

In order to again permit theflowfof gas pressure. This is accomplished, by moving cylinder 15 to anotherposition, for instance that shown in Figs. 5 and 7v or 6 and 8, whereby the valve is forced to leave aperture 13. Then the cylinder is turned to position ofF ig. 3, and the valve willbe the manner dedesigned for use in vertical position. It becomes desirable, however, to adapt it tor use also in a horizontalv position, where the gravity `action of the valve can not be utilized'. i For this reason we have provided a spring 22 (Fig.'9)` designed to forman The operation of this modified form Aof our device is the same as that described in connection with .the vertically attached mechanism.

The operation of thevalveis the same as that in the first mentioned design, with the difference that when the valve is to be unseated it is necessary to slightl knock at the nipple. By so doing, gas 1s admitted through aperture 27 under valve 28 which is forced upward. y
