Abstract

231,039. Brownell, B. M. May 26, 1924. Ball-and-socket joints. - A ball-and-socket pipe joint comprises a socket member 1 formed with inturned ribs 4 adapted to support an annular member 6 in notches 5, and a ball member 10 supported between the member 6 and a ring 19. The sealing member is a gasket 14 positioned between the ribs 4 and the member 19 and formed with a downwardly inclined upper face 16 and diverging walls 17, 18 which move radially into tight engagement with the members 1 and 10 while fluid is passing through the joint. The retaining-cap 20 is formed with notches 23 into which a locking bolt 9 is adapted.to be screwed. The members 1, 10, and 20 are formed of iron or bronze, and the rings 6, 19 of Babbitt metal or the like.
