231,033. Sullivan, M. H. May 12, 1924. Pistons; packing. -In packing of the type in which each ring 15, Fig. 2, is formed in halves pressed apart by diametral springs 26, 27, and the joints between the halves are covered by jointpieces 18, Figs. 2 and 5, having arcuate ribs 19 entering corresponding grooves in the ends, of the ring segments, the grooves are enlarged in order to facilitate assembly of the packing, and the joint-pieces 18 are made of soft metal, e.g. aluminium, while the ribs 19 are of steel &c., preferably secured in position during casting. The housing 12 for the spring 26 of the upper packing-ring extends across the piston, but the housing 13 for the lower packing-ring is interrupted to clear the connecting-rod. The plungers 20, on which the springs act, are formed with projections 23, which engage recesses in the packing-rings.
