Clamps; vices. - The pressure of a gripping- device of the type having the gripping-face constituted by the ends of a number of separate slidable elements automatically adjusting themselves to fit any shape of work-piece, to be held is substantially equalized over all the gripping-elements by a transmitting medium such as plastic caoutchouc, viscous grease, small steel balls, or pulverulent material. The gripping-elements 2 are each formed with a slot 3 through which passes a bar 10 connected to a supporting block 9, the remaining parts of the slots being filled with the plastic or other transmitting medium 4, When pressure is applied by the screw 8, the reaction by the work on the gripping-elements first contacting therewith exerts pressure on the transmitting medium in the slots of those elements and forces it into the slots of adjoining elements so as to bring the latter into contact with the work. Each element has a projection 5 engaged by a pin 6 urged by a spring 7 tending to push it forward. In a modification, the gripping-elements are enclosed in a casing, and have upward extensions engaged by a spring-pressed transverse bar.
