Abstract

229,620. Wearn, J. S. Feb. 1924, [Convention date]. Belt gearing; tension arrangements.-In combined belt and toothed gearing for driving creamseparators and other machines, the gear wheel 1 driving the machine shaft 2 engages a pinion 4 fast on a spindle 5 carried loosely in a frame 6 pivoting loosely on the shaft 2. The pinion is driven in one direction only by a pawl 10 carried by one of a pair of plates 7, 8 splined together and engaged by spring-pressed friction pads 13 carried in a belt pulley 11 driven from a prime mover. The pinion 4 swings epicyclically upon the wheel 1 until a driving-tension in the belt varying directly with the load is produced. Shock is prevented by slip in the friction coupling. Overrunning of the machine is permitted by the pawl 10. The frictional grip may be adjusted by a screw 21. The friction pads may be carried by the plates 7, 8 pressed into contact with the central web of the pulley 11, and the spring pressure on each pair of pads may be separately screw-adjusted.
