Abstract
229,152. Boyle, M. J. May 10, 1924. Closure members, simple lift. - The head of a poppet valve, is composed of one or more resilient plates which co-operate with the seating, backed by a rigid plate. The stem 30 carries a disc 23 to support a number of flexible discs 10, of which the lowest is slightly thicker. These discs are supported by a thicker disc 24 and the discs are retained by pressing over the head 33 of the stem. This produces a slight downward curvature of the disc edges so that a resilient contact with the seating is obtained. The discs 10, 24 may be of the same or different diameters. The inlet and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine may be semi-circular as indicated in Fig. 4, to economise space.
