Clutches, friction.-A frictional torque-limiting device, particularly applicable for use in conjunction with clutches, comprises a helical spring adapted to be expanded into engagement with a driving-drum, and having its ends connected to discs freely floating on the driving-shaft, one disc constituting the driven element of the device and the other being connected to the helix by energizing compression springs or other resilient means, which act tangentially and are preferably adjustable. The limiting torque transmissible by the arrangement is only slightly affected by variation in the coefficient of friction. The rim of a driving-flywheel 1 is internally engaged by a helical coil 8, one end of which engages a lug 7 on a disc 3 freely journaled on an extension 6 of the driving-shaft 2 and the other end a lug 9 on a disc 4, which is secured to the female cone 17 of a friction clutch and bears also on the part 6. Viewed from the right, the apparatus rotates counterclockwise, the coil 8 being wound lefthanded. The floating disc 3 is turned to expand the coil by compression springs 10, which bear un lugs 11, 12 on the disc 3 and pins 13 carried by a revoluble ring 14 on the disc 4. This ring can be turned to adjust the springs by a tangentiallydisposed screw (not shown) thrusting on an extension 16 of one pin 13. The disengageable male cone 18 is pressed by a spring 19, the thrust of which is conveyed to the driving-shaft 2 by bearings 20, 21 and the hub 5 of the disc 4. A housing ring 22 is secured to the flywheel 1.
