Abstract

224,209. Kirchbach'sche Werke Kirchbach & Co. Nov. 2, 1923, [Convention date]. Universal joints for automobiles &c. Connecting - members 5 comprising tension and compression elements are employed for interconnecting the arms of spiders 4 on the shafts 1, 2, Fig. 1. A compression element. 10, Fig. 2, consisting of an oval disc of rubber has recessed ends engaging sleeves 11, through which pass bolts in the spider arms. A tension element 6, consisting of windings of hemp string or wire or a strip of flexible material, is wound around the core and coated or wholly or partly saturated with rubber or other substance, the whole coupling-member preferably being vulcanized. As shown in Fig. 4, the compression element 10 is ellipsoid in shape and is secured by metal caps 13 to attachment hooks 14, the tensile material 6 being wound about the parts 10, 13 as far as possible in meridional lines.
