Abstract

327,566. A.C. Spark Plug Co. Feb. 6, 1929, [Convention date]. Flexible shafts.-Flexible shafting for driving speedometers, dental drills, &c. consists of a central core wire 4 of phosphor bronze surrounded by a layer 6 of phosphor bronze wire wound thereon under tension so as to compress the engaging- surfaces. Upon the layer 6 are tightly wound one or more layers 8, 10 of hard steel wire, for example 0.43 carbon wire. The coefficient of friction between the phosphor bronze and steel is low, so that wear therebetween is small during bending of the shafting. Lastly, if desired, one or more layers 12 of soft steel, for example 0.10 carbon wire, are similarly added and prevent unravelling of the shaft when the shafting is cut. After each layer is wound, it is massaged between withdrawing-rollers and in a shaft-straightening operation so that the layers are each stretched and adjacent layers are slightly separated to provide lubricating space therebetween.
