Abstract

A scalp treatment composition comprises brandy, Bay Rhum, Olive oil, and extracts of angelica ginseng and Polygonum multiflorum. The composition is prepared by marinating roots of angelica, ginseng and Polygonum multiflorum in brandy, and subsequently adding the Bay Rhum and the oil. The composition appears to be able to stimulate hair growth and/or to promote good hair colour.

Description

COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR TREATMENT OF HAIR AND/OR SCALPS This invention relates to a composition for and method of treatment of hair and/or scalps, to promote healthy condition of hair and/or to promote growth. The invention relates in particular to a composition for and method of restoring hair growth on a scalp which has lost hair.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a composition for the treatment of hair and/or scalps, the composition comprising: an alcohol, an oil; and a herbal constituent comprising at least one of the following components (whether as essential oils, alcoholic extracts, synthetic analogues or otherwise); bay; angelica; ginseng; polygonum.
The alcohol may suitably comprise ethanol. It may suitably be a fruit distillate, for example brandy and/or rum.
The composition suitably comprises brandy, suitably brandy of inferior quality, in terms of its taste.
The composition suitably comprises rum. The composition may comprise an extract of bay in rum, in the form of Bay Rhum.
The composition may suitably comprise a vegetable oil. A preferred vegetable oil is olive oil.
The composition may suitably comprise a nut oil, for example coconut or almond oil. A preferred nut oil is almond oil.
The composition may suitably comprise a blend of oils. A preferred composition may comprise a vegetable oil and a nut oil, for example olive oil and almond oil.
The terms "bay", "angelica", "ginseng" and "polygonum" in botanical terms may each denote a class of related plants or plant derivatives. Whilst any such plant or plant derivatives may be used in the context of the present invention, the preferred materials designated by these terms are the well-known, available herbal and/or consumable products. For example, angelica in botanical terms denotes a large genus of tall, perennial herbs of the parsley family. The particular angelica which is believed to be of most interest in the context of the present invention is Angelica archangelica or Angelica officinalis. Preferably, the root is used.
In relation to ginseng, this denotes the genus Pan ax, perennial herbs of the aralia family. Either of the main varieties Pan at schinseng and Pan at quinquefolium may be used. The preferred ginseng is the Asiatic ginseng, Pan at schinseng. Asiatic ginseng is available from China, Korea and Japan. Chinese ginseng is preferred. Preferably, the root is used.
A preferred polygonum is polygonum multiflorum, (multiflower knotweed) especially Chinese polygonum multiflorum. Preferably, the root (tuber) is used.
The herbal constituents may be of any available type, for example essential oils, alcoholic extracts or synthetic analogues. For example, in the case of angelica, it may be acceptable to use synthetic angelic acid and/or angelic aldehyde.
A preferred composition comprises brandy, an oil, Bay Rhum, and at least one of the following components (whether as essential oils, alcoholic extracts, synthetic analogues or otherwise): angelica; ginseng; polygonum multiflorum.
A preferred composition comprises at least two of the following herbal components (whether as essential oils, alcoholic extracts, synthetic analogues or otherwise): bay; angelica; ginseng; polygonum.
A further preferred composition comprises at least three of those components.
An especially preferred composition comprises all four components.
The composition of the present invention may, in terms of its liquid components, suitably comprise alcohol and oil components within a wide range, for example from 10 to 90% alcohol to 90 to 10% oil, by weight. More preferably, the alcohol component may be from 40 to 90% by weight, especially from 50 to 80%, with the oil component preferably being from 60 to 10% by weight, especially 50 to 20%. A particularly preferred blend comprises about two-thirds alcohol to about one-third oil components.
The alcohol component may comprise from about 20 to 80% brandy to about 80 to 20% rum (for example Bay Rhum) by weight. More preferably, the ratios of these components by weight may be from 30 to 70% to 70 to 30%, especially 40 to 60% to 60 to 40%. Preferably, they are present in about equal weight.
The herbal ingredients may be present in relatively small quantities.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of treating hair and/or scalps in order to promote healthy growth of hair and/or to restore growth which has been lost, which process comprises treating hair and/or scalps with the composition as defined previously.
In the method of the invention, the hair and/or scalp should be treated regularly with the composition, for example at least once a day, and for a substantial period, for example at least several weeks.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a process for the preparation of the composition as herein described and defined, the process comprising marinating a natural herbal component selected from any of the components herein mentioned, in an alcohol and, optionally, an oil.
In this process, the marination preferably takes place for a substantial period, for example at least six weeks, and preferably for approximately three months. The process suitably takes place at ambient temperature. In the process, small quantities of natural herbal materials, for example roots and/or leaves and/or stalks are immersed. The quantities of the materials required will depend on the quality thereof. For example, when angelica is present in the composition, appropriate strength of the angelica component of the composition may be achieved by immersion of approximately 1-20 grams, preferably approximately 2-10 grams, of the root, preferably sliced, per approximately 1 litre of the alcohol of the eventual composition.
When the composition comprises a polygonum component, appropriate strength of the polygonum component of the composition may be achieved by immersion of approximately 1-20 grams, preferably approximately 210 grams, of the root, preferably sliced, per approximately 1 litre of the alcohol of the eventual composition.
When ginseng is present appropriate strength of the ginseng component of the composition may be achieved by immersion of approximately 0.1-10 grams, preferably approximately 0.5-5 grams, of the root, preferably sliced, per approximately 1 litre of the alcohol of the eventual composition.
Suitably, in the process in accordance with the present invention, the herbal components are marinated in brandy, which is subsequently mixed with the oil and/or any other ingredients, such as Bay Rhum.
In a detailed example of the present invention, a process for the preparation of the composition in accordance with the invention comprised the following.
To a bottle of cheap brandy was added, approximately, 0.9 grams Chinese ginseng, as small pieces of root, 2.7 grams of Chinese polygonum multiflorum, as root slices, and 3.4 grams Chinese angelica, as root slices. The brandy was left for three months to extract the essential oils from the root materials. At the end of this period, the brandy was strained to remove the root materials, and an equal volume of Bay Rhum was added. Then, a volume of a blend of oils, again equal in volume to the brandy, was added. The oils were almond oil and olive oil in equal quantities.
The composition may be used prophylactically to reduce the risk of hair loss by promoting healthy and vigorous growth. The composition may also have the effect of retaining hair colour.
The composition described appears in preliminary tests to stimulate hair growth, even on a bald scalp.
