Abstract
A device for protecting the hand of a person carrying a plastics carrier bag(s) or a case comprises a body 10 of channel section open along its upper part and having an elongate base 12 and side walls 13. Each end 12 includes a drooped, i.e. downwardly extending, surface 14, which may be a central extension of the surface at each end. In use, the device is held in the user's hand with the handles of a carrier bag(s) lying along the channel and extending over the ends of the device. <IMAGE>
Description
A HAND GUARD
This invention relates to a device for protecting the hand of a person carrying a plastics carrier bag.
A disadvantage of plastic carrier bags is that when heavily laden the handles tend to cut into the fingers of the person carrying the carrier bag or bags.
An object of this invention is to provide a device to obviate or mitigate that disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided a device comprising a body which, at least in use, has an elongate base with side walls and opposed ends which include or comprise a surface which curves away from the longitudinal axis of the body.
Preferably, the body is of channel cross section open along its upper part, the ends of which include a surface which extends away from the open part of the channel.
Preferably also, said surface is formed by an extension of the base of the channel.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a device according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the device;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device;
Fig. 4 is a plan view; and
Fig. 5 is a development of the device in plan.
Referring to the drawings, the device is a body 10 of channel section open along its upper part 11. It may be U shaped but is preferably cylindrical having an elongate base 12 and side walls 13. Each end of the device includes a drooped, i.e. downwardly extending surface 14 which in the preferred embodiment is a central extension of the surface at each end.
The length of the device is substantially the width of a person's hand, so it may be produced in various sizes, possibly just two. An average size may be, e.g. 96 mm long. The diameter may be 22.5 mm and the width of the opening along the upper part may be 11 mm. The drooped end extensions may be 10 mm in length. As illustrated in Fig.
5, the device, as a development has radiussed edges and end extensions 14.
In use, the device is held in the user's hand with the handles of a carrier bag lying along the channel and over the extending ends of the device; this prevents the ends of the device cutting into the material of the handles, while the device protects the user's hand against the plastics material cutting into the flesh.
The device may be of any suitable material but is preferably a firm foamed plastics material for use over a period of time or of e.g. cardboard for disposal after a short term of use.
The device could be used, for example, as a promotion with advertising detail advertising the store or supermarket selling or giving it away, or it could be sold to the public singly or in packs.
In a modification (not shown) the material 12'may be flat or substantially flat such as in Fig. 5 and bendable into a cylindrical shape in the hand. It has of course, end extensions 14' which can droop so that no undue stress is placed on the handles of the plastic bag or bags being carried.
The device may be modified in size to protect the hand of a person carrying bags other than plastic bags, cases and the like.
Claims (7)
1. A device comprising a body which at least in use, has an elongate base with side walls and opposed ends which include or comprise a surface which extends away from the longitudinal axis of the body.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the body is of channel cross section open along its upper part, the ends of which include a surface which extends away from the open part of the channel.
3. A device as claimed in claim 2 in which said surface droops away from the respective ends of the body.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 in which said surface is formed by an extension of the base of the channel.
5. A device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 in which said surface is rounded.
6. A device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
