Abstract

A detachable handgrip, for use with a carrier bag or other container or object having handles formed from thin elements, comprises a sleeve-like member 10 of flexible rubber or plastics material which is formed end-to-end with a longitudinal slit 12 so that it may be engaged over the handles 15 of the carrier bag or the like to receive the handles and constitute a grip for the hand as a result of which the load is spread over the length and width of the sleeve-like member. The outer surface of the sleeve-like member opposite the longitudinal slit is profiled to provide finger grips 14, and the opposite ends of the slit 12 are outwardly divergent so as to facilitate entry of the handles through the slit. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvement in or relating to handgrips The invention relates to handgrips and sets out to provide a detachable handgrip for use with carrier bags or other containers or objects having handles formed from thin elements.
Carrier bags provide a cheap and convenient method of carrying goods, but they usually suffer from the disadvantge that when the bag is filled with heavy goods it becomes uncomfortable and even painful to carry for lengthy periods due to the thin elements of the handles of the bag cutting into the hands of the user. These handles may sometimes be formed from string or moulded from thin plastics, but in the case of carrier bags formed from plastics the handles are usually formed by providing elongate apertures in opposite sides of the bag adjacent the mouth thereof. The user then passes his or her hand through the apertures and the portions of the sides of the bag above the apertures collapse into the hand to form the handles.Where the bag is filled with heavy goods the weight of the goods stretches the plastics material of the handles so formed and draws them into a narrow strip which tends to cut into the hand of the user. A similar problem may be found with the carrying of other objects provided only with rudimentary handles, for example where a package is tied up with string it may be necessary to carry the package by using the string as a handle.
According to the invention there is provided a detachable handgrip, for use with a carrier bag or other container or object having one or more handles formed from thin elements, the handgrip comprising a sleeve-like member of flexible material which is formed end-to-end with a longitudinal slit so that is may be engaged over the handles of the carrier bag or the like to receive such handles and constitute a grip for the hand as a result of which the load is spread over the length and width of the sleeve-like member.
The sleeve-like member may be formed from rubber, synthetic rubber or resilient or non-resilient plastics material.
The outer surface of the sleeve-like member opposite said longitudinal slit may be profiled to provide finger grips. Not only does this make the handgrip more confortable, but use of the finger grips ensures that the longitudinal slit in the member is kept uppermost so that there is no danger of the handles slipping out of the handgrip.
Preferably the opposite ends of the longitudinal slit are outwardly divergent so as to facilitate entry of the handles through the slit.
The following is a detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying draw ings in which: Figure lisa plan view of a handgrip according to the invention, Figure 2 is a side view of the handgrip when in use, and Figure 3 is an end view of the handgrip when in use.
The handgrip 10 is formed from rubber, synthetic rubber or resilient plastics material and is in the form of a generally sleeve-like member having apertures 11 at opposite ends therof and formed with a longitudinal slit 12 end-to-end along the upper side thereof. The opposite ends of the longitudinal slit 12 are divergent, as indicated at 13, where the slit runs into the apertures at the ends of the member.
As best seen in Figure 2, the surface of the member opposite the slit 12 is profiled to provide finger grips 14.
In use, the handgrip is engaged over the handles 15 of a carrier bag by passing the handles through the slit 12 so that the handgrip encircles the handles.
The divergent ends 13 of the slit 12 facilitate insertion of the handles into the grip. The handgrip then serves to spread the load in the carrier bag over the length and width of the handgrip and serves to make the bag comfortable to carry.
In the arrangement shown in the drawings the handles 15 are shown as comprising the folded upper edge portions of a plastics carrier bag, but it will be appreciated that the handgrip may be used with other types of handle, for example handles formed from string or thin plastics strips.
Preferably the resilience of the material from which the handgrip is formed is such that the slit 12 is substantially closed when the handgrip is in use to avoid any possibility of the handgrip becoming detached from the handles, in normal use, while allowing the handgrip to be pulled from the handles when required.
The handgrip may be injection moulded and may be integrally moulded with a design, trade name of advertising material along one or both sides thereof.
The handle might also be moulded with ribs or other protrusions to provide a grip. The handgrip may be moulded in various colours.
It is envisaged that handgrips of the kind described will be sold separately in stores making use of carrier bags so that the handgrips may be purchased by customers for continuing re-use with carrier bags obtained in the store.
It will be appreciated that the arrangement illustrated is by way of example only and any shape of sleeve-like member may be employed to achieve the same purpose. For example the fingergrips 14 are purely optional and the handgrip could be substantially tubular. If required, outwardly projecting annular flanges may be provided at opposite ends of the handgrip around the end apertures 11. Preferably portions of the handgrip which undergo most stress in use, such as the bottom surface along with the handles 15 run and the surfaces on either side of the slit 12, may be thickened for additional strength.
