Abstract

A detachable handle for one or more carrier bags, comprises a resilient plastic hollow tube 1 having a split 2, the edges of which are in contact, widenings 3 at both ends of the split 2 and indentations 4 for the fingers. <IMAGE>

Description

DETACHABLE CARRIER BAG HANDLE This invention relates to a detachable carrier bag handle.
Handles made to the form of the average hand for improved grip and comfort have long been available on suitcases, briefcases and other hand held articles.
Plastic carrier bags available at supermarkets and other retail outlets that are made of thin plastic sheet tend to dig into the fingers causing considerable discomfort especially if containing heavy articles or if carried over long distances.
A disposable carrier bag with a handle formed to the shape of the fingers is not considered to be economically viable.
According to the present invention there is provided a detachable handle for carrier bags comprising a handle, means for repeated attachment to and detachment from carrier bag handles, the detachable handle increasing the surface area available to distribute the load of the articles carried over the fingers of the carrying hand.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the detachable carrier bag handle in perspective; Figure 2 illustrates the attachment of the detachable carrier bag handle to a carrier bag; Figure 3 shows the detachable carrier bag handle attached to a carrier bag.
Referring to the drawing the detachable carrier bag handle is a single unit comprising a resilient plastic hollow tube 1, a split 2,the edges of which are in contact, along the length of the top edge of the detachable carrier bag handle, widenings 3 at both ends of the split 2 and indentations 4 to the form of the fingers are provided along the lower edge of the detachable carrier bag handle as shown in Fig 1.
In order to attach a carrier bag to the detachable carrier bag handle firstly the lower edges of the carrier bag handles are pulled into the split 2 at one end of the detachable carrier bag handle by means of a split widening 3 as shown in Fig 2. The carrier bag handles are then pulled through the full length of the split 2 as illustrated in Fig 2, and giving the end result as shown in Fig 3.
In order to remove the detachable carrier bag handle the upper edges of the carrier bag handles are pulled into the split 2 at one end of the detachable carrier bag handle by means of a split widening 3. The detachable carrier bag handle is then pulled down releasing the carrier bag handles through the full length of the split 2.
The handles of a carrier bag may be attached to the detachable carrier bag handle one at a time.
One or more carrier bags may be attached to a single detachable carrier bag handle.

Claims (6)

1 A detachable carrier bag handle comprising a handle, means for repeated attachment to and detachment from carrier bag handles, the handle increasing the surface area available to distribute the load of the articles carried over the fingers of the carrying hand.
2 A detachable carrier bag handle as claimed in Claim 1 comprising a resilient plastic hollow tube wherein carrier bag attachment means are provided by a split, the edges of which are in contact, along the length of the detachable carrier bag handle.
3 A detachable carrier bag handle as claimed in Claim 2 wherein carrier bag attachment means are facilitated by widenings at both ends of the aforementioned split.
4 A detachable carrier bag handle as claimed in any of Claims 1-3 wherein indentations in the form of the fingers are provided.
5 A detachable carrier bag handle as claimed in any of Claims 1-4 wherein means for attachment to two or more carrier bags at the same time are provided.
6 A detachable carrier bag handle as claimed in all previous Claims substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
