Abstract

223,263. Loomis, C. C., and Stump, H. E. May 15, 1923. Coating processes.-Indiarubber latex is partially coagulated by the regulated use of coagulants to produce a viscous paste which is applied to fabrics &c., the coagulation being completed during or after the utilization of the partlycoagulated mass. To produce the partial coagulation, the protein is first converted into gel by means of formaldehyde tannic acid or a metallic salt, and the rubber is then agglomerated by means of an acid or a further addition of a salt. For example, to 100 c.c.s. of latex 10 c.c.s. of 10 per cent solution of zinc acetate may be added, followed by 1 c.c. of ¢ per cent solution af acetic acid. Alternatively, 32-34 c.c.s of a 10 per cent solution of aluminium sulphate may be added to 100 c.c.s of latex. Protective colloids, such as glue, albumen, casein, soaps, saponin, tannic acid, agar, &c. may be added to prevent too rapid coagulation. Filling and vulcanizing ingredients may be added before coagulation. Specifieations 1111*/14 and 191,474, [both in Class 70, India-rubber &c.], are referred to.
