Coating processes. - Indiarubber latex is first vulcanized and is then partially coagulated by the regulated use of coagulants to produce a viscous paste of cheese-like consistency. This paste is applied to fabrics &c. and coagulation is completed by drying or pressing, during or after such application. The latex may be vulcanized at 13o-140‹ C. with the addition of 3-10 per cent of sulphur. To produce the partial coagulation, the protein is first converted into gel by means of formaldehyde, tannic acid, or a metallic salt, and the rubber is then agglomerated by means of an acid or a further addition of a salt. For example, to 100 c.c.s. of vulcanized latex may be added 10 c.c.s. of a 10 per cent solution of zinc acetate, followed by 1 c.c. of ¢ per cent solution of zinc acetate, followed by 1 c.c. of ¢ per cent solution of acetic acid. Alternatively, 32-34 c.c.s. of a 10 per cent solution of aluminium sulphate may be added to 100 c.c.s. of the latex. Protective colloids such as glue, albumen, casein, soaps, saponin, tannic acid &c. may be added to the vulcanized latex to prevent too rapid coagulation. Filling and colouring agents may be added to the latex before vulcanization. Specifications 193,451 and 208,235, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], are referred to.
