Abstract

222,435. Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co., (Assignees of Chryst, W. A.). Sept. 29, 1923, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an electric or other starter comprising a driving pinion 40 movable axially on a shaft 33 into engagement with an engine member 12 and driven from the shaft through a friction clutch and an actuating member 42 mounted for automatic movement along the shaft, a manually-operated member 28 is arranged to move both the member 42 and the pinion along the shaft. As shown, the pinion 40 is loosely mounted on the shaft 33 and the clutch comprises plates 53, 53a connected alternately to a shell 52, secured rigidly to the pinion, and to the member 42, which has a threaded part 45 engaging screw-threads 44 on the shaft 33. The lever 28 for moving the sleeve 42 and the pinion 40 engages a flanged collar 48, a spring 51 being interposed between the collar 48 and a flange 46 on the sleeve 42. The lever 28 also switches on the motor 32 by means of an adjustable stud 28<b> engaging a member 65 carrying a contact 64 for engagement with contacts 62, 66. When the pinion 40 is fully in mesh with the fly-wheel, the clutch is tightened by the action of the screwthreads 44, which release the clutch when the engine over-runs the pinion. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the fly-wheel, the continued axial movement of the collar 48 tightens the clutch and the pinion is rotated sufficiently to bring its teeth into register between those of the fly-wheel.
