Feeding and registering webs.-In embossing and stamping machines wherein metallic leaf on a paper carrying-strip is passed between a die and a platen or bed, the strip-feeding mechanism, which is of the type comprising feed-rollers rotated intermittenly by sprocket and chain mechanism acting through a free-wheel and driven by manuallyoperated means such as a handle, includes a plunger actuated by a cam on a hand-wheel, &c., and a lever connected at one end to the plunger and at the other end to the chain which drives the feed-rollers, the other end of the chain being attached to a spring, whereby the plunger is moved towards the cam. This movement may be regulated by an adjustable stop to vary the feed as required. The shaft 52 actuating the bed 50 of the press carries a hand-wheel 6 provided with a cam 5 engaging a roller 4 on a plunger 1 sliding in a housing 2, the plunger 1 being connected by a pin 9 to one end of a rocking lever 8 pivoted on a bracket 7. The other end of the lever 8 is connected to a chain 15 which passes round a pulley 16 and a free-wheel 17 on a sleeve attached to one of the feed rollers 19 and has its other end secured to a spring 21 so that the plunger 1 is urged outwardly towards the cam. A second serrated feed roller 42 coacting with the roller 19 is mounted on a shaft 43 .adjustable in supporting arms by screws 46. When the handwheel 6 is operated in one direction to effect the impression by the die 29, the cam allows the plunger to move outwards under the influence of the spring 21 but without actuating the feed roller 19 by reason of the free-wheel 17. On reverse movement of the hand-wheel the plunger is pushed inwards by the cam, thus driving the freewheel 17 and pulling forward a length of strip 27 from the supply roll 28. The length fed may he varied by adjusting the screw 23. A spring 30, carried by an adjustable slotted plate 32, keeps the leaf away. from the edge of the die 29 whilst it is drawn forward, and the strip is guided laterally by lugs 34 carried by adjustable slotted plates 35. The plunger 1 carries a pointer 25 moving over a scale 26 to facilitate adjustment for varying the length of feed.
