Abstract
252,220. Rose, W., and Rose Bros., (Gainsborough), Ltd. Jan. 23, 1925. Feeding webs.-Apparatus for feeding a web of paper, foil, or other material to a cutting &c. apparatus comprises two pairs of continuously rotating feed rollers, the rollers of the second pair having a slightly greater surface speed than those of the first pair and being separated periodically, during which periods of separation, a web-arresting device between the two pairs of rollers grips the web to hold it stationary during the cutting &c. operation. In one form. Fig. 1, the web passes between a first pair of feed rollers 4, 9, between a fixed bar 13 and movable gripping member 20 and between the second pair of feed rollers 11, 12 to a cutting device 41, 42. The shaft 2 of the roller 4 is driven continuously and is connected by chain or toothed gearing to the shaft 39 of the roller 12 and the rollers of each pair are geared together. The roller 11 is carried by chain or toothed gearing to the shaft 39 of the roller 12 and the rollers of each pair are geared together. The roller 11 is carried by an arm 33 loose upon a spindle 18 and secured to a second arm 31 having a lug 30 in engagement with a lug 29 on a lever 27 also loose upon the spindle 18 and carrying a roller 46 held by a spring 47 in contact with a cam 6 on the shaft 2. A second lug 32 on the lever 27 is adapted to engage a lug 24 on an arm 22 of a frame 16 loose upon the spindle 18 and carrying the gripping member 20 which is pressed into engagement with the web by a spring 25. The rollers 4, 9 are pressed together by strong springs 45 and the roller 11, at certain times, presses lightly upon the roller 12 by its own weight and the weight of the arms 33, 31. With the parts in the position shown, the web 21 accumulates in a loop between the rollers 4, 9 and web-arresting device 13, 20 and during this time the cutters are operated to sever the web. As the cam 6 rotates the lever 27 rises and, by the engagement of the lug 32 with the lug 24, raises the member 20 to release the web. At about the same time, the lug 29 is withdrawn from the lug 30 allowing the roller 11 to contact with the web 21 and feed it forward. The light pressure of the roller 11 upon the web allows slipping of the roller after the web is taut. Upon engagement of the high part of the cam 6 with the roller 46, the parts are again moved to the position shown. In another form, Fig. 4, the web-arresting device comprises a fixed bar 68 between the pairs of rollers 62, 52, and 66, 67, and a gripping member 71 carried by an arm 74 of a frame 75, loose upon the spindle 77 of the feed roller 66, and having an arm 90 operated by a cam 54 on the shaft of the feed roller 52, cam roller 100, arms 97, 94, and link 91. The spindle 77 is carried by a second frame 79 pivoted on studs 58, the axes of which are approximately coincident with the line of contact of the member 71 with the web 87. A weighted arm 106 is provided on the frame 75 to press the roller 66 lightly against the web. A plate 103 may be secured to the frame 79 to guide the web to the cutting devices 88, 89. When the low portion of the cam 54 is opposite to the roller 100, a spring 102, acting through the parts 97, 94, 91, and 90, turns the frame 75 so that the member 71 grips the web 87 and arrests its forward movement. The member 71 then acts as a fulcrum about which the frame 79 turns thereby lifting the roller 66 out of contact with the web. During the subsequent period before the return of the parts by the engagement of the high part of the cam 54 with the roller 100, the cutters are operated and the web fed by the rollers 62, 52 accumulates in a loop. A handle 106 is provided on the frame 79 to allow the rollers 66, 67 and the parts 71, 68 to be separated for threading the web.
