Abstract
659,264. Labelling-machines. NATIONAL BREAD WRAPPING MACHINE CO. Aug. 9, 1949, No. 20676. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1948. [Class 73] A labelling-machine in which labels are severed from a web and applied by a pressure roll to packages &c. has a pivoted label carrier into which the end of the web is fed and which, after the label is severed, swings to press the label against the pressure roll which feeds it over a heating shoe, to activate the adhesive, and into contact with the package. Means are provided to feed the web in registered position relative to a printing device and severing knives. The web w, Fig. 5, having longitudinally spaced notches n is driven from a roll r, not shown, and passes over a registering drum 31, guide rollers 32, 33 to feed rolls 34, 35. The pins 61 are slightly more closely spaced than the notches n and the feed rolls 34, 35 are driven slightly faster than the drum 31 so that some tension is applied to the web between them and the rear of a notch n leaving the drum 31 is always in contact with a registering pin 61 ensuring that the web is correctly positioned relative to a printing block 87 and severing knives 67, 68. The feeding rolls 34, 35 and the drum 31 are driven by a short shaft, connected to the main cam shaft 5, which also operates, by a cam, the printing device and shearing knives in timed relation. The web is fed to project between plates 100, 101 of a carrier 62 attached to a lever 103, Fig. 2, pivoted between its ends at 104 and having a cam roller 105 held in contact with a cam 106, not shown, on the shaft 5, which after the label has been severed, racks the carrier to the position in Fig. 11 to press the label against a driven drum 4 which by co-operating with a toothed wheel 111 feeds it over a heated shoe 114 to press it against a package p advanced by a belt 11. The applied label is held against the package p on the belt 11 by a belt 12 backed by a plate 16 until the adhesive is set. A chain 9 passes round sprockets 6, 7, 8, not shown, on a driven shaft 2 and shafts 3, 5 so that the belt 12 driven by a pulley 13 on the shaft 2, the drum 4 on the shaft 3 and the cam shaft 5 are driven in timed relation. The sprocket 8, not shown, is rotatable about the cam shaft 5 and is connected to it by a clutch mechanism which becomes disengaged when a feeler 139 on an arm 134 fails to contact a package so as to stop the labelling mechanism when a package is missing. A hand operated trip is provided to stop the labelling mechanism and an overload device is provided for the cam shaft 5. The mechanism may be duplicated on both sides of the belt 11 where it is desired to apply a label to opposite ends of the package &c.
