This invention relates to a strip feeding machine or device of the nature where one or more strips of flexible material, such as metallic leaf, paper, cloth, or composition and the like is advanced or pulled to difierent desired lengths.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efl icient strip or leaf pulling device in which the leaf pulling mechanism comprises a flexible belt member swingably or movably supported adjacent a driven strip pulling roll in such a manner that the surfaces of the belt and roll will be in extended contact when said roll and belt are in operative position, but will be disengaged when said belt member swings, or otherwise moves, away from the roll to readily admit of supplying new strips of stamping material or .of adjusting the same. In other words, the object of my invention may be said to include the provision of means for engaging extended contact surfaces of strip pulling members and means for separating the contact surfaces of said members. I also provide means for positively driving one of said members a definite distance for the purpose ofv advancing the strip or stamping medium at predetermined intervals to new impress positions.
Another object includes the provision of a strip or leaf pulling, device which is ellicient in operation, economical of manufacture, and wherein the flexible member enfolds, to a considerable extent, the roll member so as to afford a large contact surface of the strip or leaf material, thereby avoiding breaking or tearing of said material.
Other objects will appear hereinafter and I obtain these objects by a constructionillustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of astrip feeding attachment or machine which is I equipped with my improvement;

In my Patent No. 1,737,598 of December 3,
1929, for Press attachments for feeding roll leaves I have disclosed a type of apparatus for feeding a plurality of roll strips to predetermined distances at intervals of time determined by the press mechanism. In
the present invention I utilize certain elements disclosed in said patent and have added thereto the means for engaging extended surface contact of the strip pulling members instead of having mere line contact. This advantage affords means for better pulling the strip medium forward without slippage or breaking the same. My invention also contemplates the use of a movable contact member whereby it is possible to disengage the contact surfaces of the feeding devices for, s
the purpose of easily inserting new strips or for readjusting the old ones. In the construction shown in the accom panying drawing I provide a frame 10'for supporting the strip feeding mechanism.
Said frame also supports the motor and op- I crating attachments for feeding the roll leaf a predetermined distance at suitable intervals of time determined by the printing device to which my invention is applied. Attached to either end of frame 10 are the brackets 11 and 12 fastened thereto by suitable means. At the extremity of brackets 11 and 12 there is rotatably mounted the feed roller 13.
Adjacent to the feed roller 13 in said brackets is mounted a rotatable roller 14 on a journal 15. Attached to the ends of the .free ends of said straps an idler roll 18 is supported. Stretched over the idler rolls 14 and 18 is a belt or feed member of any suitable material, such as rubber, leather, or a The relation of feed on the idler rolls said belt and the surface of the feed roll engage to a suitable extent thereby forming a greater surface engagement for the strip medium 23. In order to maintain the flexible belt and rolls in operative position there is provided a finger 20 engaging a stop 21 (see Figs. 2 and 3) of the flange of roll 14, thereby keeping the belt in contact with the feed roll. If now it is desired to disengage the contact between the surfaces of the flexible belt and the feed roll, finger 20 is depressed and the frame, composed of straps l6 and 17 and idler roll 18, drops down into position 16 shown in dotted lines on Fig. 2, thereby opening the distance between the belt surface and the roll surface for the insertion or adjustment of the strip or roll leaf material. In the construction herein shown the belt member is movably supported, that is it swings away from the feed roll to vary the contact between the feed roll and the belt surfaces. In the con struction herein shown but two idler rolls are used to support the belt. But obviously a different construction might be employed if desired to thus support the belt.
In order to intermittently advance the feed roll 13 there is provided a pull chain 24 which encircles suitable clutch mechanism (which is more fully explained in my acknowledged patent) for pulling forward the feed roll a definite distance depending on the location of the chain 24 when attached to the sector arm 25. This sector arm pivotally moves on pivot 26 when the control arm 27 is rocked by reason of the bell crank 28 being operated by the drive or friction clutch 29, which clutch is put into operation whenever the trip finger 30 releases the clutch holding disc 31 in the manner more fully described in said patent. A motor 32 is provided to operate the friction clutch through a drive mechanism comprising a set of reduction gears, represented by 33, 34, a shaft 35, and gears 86 and 37. The friction clutch is putinto operation whenever the trip bar 38 is rocked to operate a toggle 39 by reason of movement of the printing platen or equivalent structure (not shown) being brought into contact for making the impress and when it is desirable to move the strip material forward a definite distance to supply a fresh impress material.
What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a strip feeding device, the combination of strip pulling members, means for holding engaged extended contact surfaces of said strip pulling members, means for separating the contact surfaces of said members, and means for positively'drivingone of said strip pulling members a predetermined distance.
2. In a metallic strip pulling device,,the combination of a roller member, and means for intermittently advancing said roller surface to a predetermined distance, a second roller member rotatively supported adjacent said first named roller member, means pivotally supported from said second roller member, a third roller member rotatively supported in said means, and flexible means supported on two of said roller members to thereby engage the other of said roller members.
3. In a strip pulling device, the combination of a roller member and means for intermittently advancing said roller surface to a predetermined distance, a second roller member rotatively supported adjacent said first named roiler member, means pivotally supported from said second roller member, a third roller member rotatively supported in said means, a flexible belt mounted on the rotatively supported roller members, and
means for locking said roller members into position for impressing said belt against the intermittently advancing roller.

In a strip pulling device, the combination of a roller member and means for intermittently advancing said roller surface to a predetermined distance, swingable means mounted adjacent said intermittently advancing roller, a flexible belt on said swingable means, and means for holding said belt pressed onto the surface of the intermittently advancing roller. 7
5. In a strip pulling device, the combination of a roller member and means forpositively driving said roller surface to a predetermined distance, swingable means mounted adjacent said positively driven roller, a flexible belt on said swingable means, means to press said flexible belt onto an extended surface of said positively driven roller, and means to release such pressure.
6. In a strip pulling device, the combination of a driven roller member having a cylindrical surface, a movable strip holding "flexible surface for engaging an extended contact surface of the strip pulling member. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 16th day of May, A. D.,
