Abstract

200,940. Pannett, D. J. F. April 28, 1922. Transferring designs.-A machine for applying transfer stamps to textile goods comprises a fixed, electrically heated block or iron and a hinged platen operated by a rock-shaft and adapted to receive the articles to be marked and press them against a transfer strip intermittently fed between the platen and the iron. A transfer strip 1 passes from a supply spool 2 to a receiving spool 3 between a fixed electrically heated iron 9 and a platen 10 which is mounted on a pivot 11 and is raised to effect the transfer by a link 16 connected to an arm 15 on a rock-shaft 14 operated by a treadle 13. During the downward movement of the platen, the strip 1 is fed forward by a pair of rollers 8, 18 the former of which is driven by ratchet mechanism comprising a ratchet disc 22 and a pawl-carrying disc 19 connected by a link 29 to a plunger 30 which is raised by an arm 32 on the shaft 14 and depressed by a spring 33. The ratchet disc 22 is locked after each operation by a tooth 27 on a spring-actuated detent lever 26 engaging notches 25 in a disc 24 fast to the disc 22, and the detent lever is depressed to release the ratchet disc by means of a roller 21 on the disc 19. This ratchet mechanism mav be mounted on the shaft of the feed-roller 8 or, as shown, on a separate shaft connected to the feedroller by change gearing 37. To allow a bundle of articles to be placed on the platen and to be removed successively as the printing proceeds, the platen proper 10 may be supported by springs 47 from the hinged member 10<1>. With this arrangement means are provided to delay the feed of the strip 1 until the platen is lowered sufficiently to bring the articles clear of the strip. These means may comprise a slotted connection, controlled by a spring 52, between the link 29 and plunger 30, and a stop 28<1> on the detent lever 26 adapted to be engaged by the roller 21 to limit the idle stroke of the disc 19, so that during the latter part of the rise of the plunger 30, the spring 52 is compressed. During the initial part of the fall of the platen the plunger 30 therefore moves idly. An alternative arrangement to delay the feed of the strip consists in mounting the arm 32 loosely on the shaft 14 and actuating it from the shaft by a spring stronger than the spring 33, a stop being provided to arrest the rise of the plunger 30 before the treadle completes its downward movement. Instead of actuating the feed-roller by the mechanism above described, the treadle may rock a double-armed spring-controlled lever, the ends of which are connected by a chain passing over a wheel coupled to the feed-roller shaft through a freewheel clutch. The ends of the chain may be adjustably connected to the lever by bolts and slots.
