Abstract

A carrying handle 10 which can be engaged with the handles 14 of a carrier bag 15 consists of an elongate member 11 provided at each end with a recess 12 which is open to the upper edge of the member 11 and which can receive a respective handle 14 therein and the open end of the recess can be provided with a resilient member 13 to prevent the handles 14 becoming inadvertently detached from the recesses 12 when the bag 15 is put down. <IMAGE>

Description

CARRYING HANDLE This invention relates to a carrying handle which can be engaged with the handles provided on a carrier bag.

Carrier bags are usually provided with a pair of handles which may be attached thereto and formed of string or which are intregrally formed with the bag as is such with conventional plastics carrier bags. Such handles are thin and when a heavy load is being carried in the carrier bag the thin handles tend to cut into the hand or leave wealds on the skin surface of the hand.

The present invention provides a carrying handle which when engaged with the thin handles of a carrier bag can be used to lift and carry one or more bags in a more comfortable manner.

According to the present invention there is provided a carrying handle which can be engaged with the handles of a carrier bag, comprising an elongate member provided adjacent each end with a recess which is open to a longitudinal upper edge of the elongate member and which can receive a handle of a carrier bag therein.

Preferably the open end of each recess is at least partially closed by a resilient or resiliently loaded retainer which allows a handle of a carrier bag to be inserted into the recess and which prevents the handle of the carrier bag becoming inadvertently detached from the recess when the bag is put down.

An embodiment of the carrying handle according to the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the carrying handle; and Figure 2 shows a retainer member in more detail.

The carrying handle is indicated generally at 10 and consists of an elongate member 11 provided adjacent each end with an arcuate recess 12 which is open to the longitudinal upper edge of the member 11. The member 11 may be formed of any suitable material, such as wood, metal or plastics material.

In this illustrated embodiment the open end of each recess 12 is partially closed by a resiliently loaded pivotable retainer 13. Alternatively, the retainer 13 can be integral with the member 11 and be flexible.

In use of the handle 10 the handles 14 of a carrier bag 15 are engaged in the recesses 12 and the handle 10 can be used to lift a heavily laden carrier bag 15. The pivotable retainers 13 prevent the handles 14 becoming inadvertently detached from the recesses 12. In order to detach the handle 10 from the handles 14 of the bag 15, the retainers 13 are pivoted downwardly against the resilient loading to enable the handles 14 to be moved out of the recesses 12.

It will be appreciated that the retainers 13 can be dispensed with.

The recesses 12 may have any desired shape. The handle 10 may be suitably shaped so as to fit comfortably in the hand.

Claims

1. A carrying handle which can be engaged with the handles of a carrier bag, comprising an elongate member provided adjacent each end with a recess open to a longitudinal upper edge of the elongate member and which can receive a handle of a carrier bag therein.

2. A carrying handle as claimed in claim 1, in which the open end of each recess is at least partially closed by a resilient or resiliently loaded retainer which allows a handle of a carrier bag to be inserted into the recess and which prevents the handle of the carrier bag becoming inadvertently detached from the recess when the bag is put down.

3. A carrying handle as claimed in claim 2, in which the resilient retainer is integral with the elongate member.

4. A carrying handle as claimed in any preceding claim, in which each recess is arcuate.

5. A carrying handle as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the elongate member is shaped so as to fit comfortably in the hand of the user.

6. A carrying handle as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the elongate member is formed from metal or plastics material or wood.

i. A carrying handle which can be engaged with the handles of a carrier bag, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
