A carrying aid 1 suitable for use in carrying string tied parcels or polythene carrier bags H comprises a channel member 2 having a generally rounded section and a length corresponding generally to or slightly greater than an average palm width, and at least one transverse groove 4 extending across the opposed free edges 3 of the channel member 2 intermediate the longitudinal ends 10, 11 thereof. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Carrying aid This invention relates to a carrying aid suitable for use in carrying plastics carrier bags and string tied parcels.
The use of plastics carrier bags has become increasingly widespread despite the fact that when heavily laden these can be quite uncomfortable to carry because the handles collapse into a string-like form which cuts into the fingers. Similar problems arise in the carrying of string-tied parcels. Afurther problem which arises when carrying a number of bags is that of losing grip on one or more of the handles.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid or minimize one or more of the above problems.
The present invention provides a carrying aid suitable for use in carrying string tied parcels or polythene carrier bags which aid comprises a channel member having a generally rounded section and a length corresponding generally to or slightly greater than an average palm width, and at least one transverse groove extending across the opposed free edges of the channel member intermediate the longitudinal ends thereof.
With a carrying aid of the present invention the load is distributed so that quite heavy loads can be comfortably carried in the hand. At the same time the handles of the number of bags are retained together. Also when carrying a string tied parcel, the transverse groove by engaging a transversely extending string run prevents movement of the aid relative to the parcel and thus maintains the latter in a stable carrying position. Moreover the compact form of the aid enables it to be readily carried in a handbag or pocket so that it is always available for use when required.
It will be appreciated that various modifications may be made to the above invention. Thus for example the central groove may be dispensed with if only bags are to be carried. In this case the channel member is usually provided with a generally rounded projection free extension on one side which fits into the palm of the user for greater comfort.
Further preferred features and advantages of the present invention will apppear from the following detailed description given by way of example of some preferred embodiments illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first carrying aid of the invention; Figure 2 is a similar view of a second aid; Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section illustrating a possible modification to the first aid; and Figures 4 and 5 are generally views of possible uses of the first aid.
Figure 1 shows a carrying aid 1 of the present invention comprising a channel member 2 of generally rounded-generally U-shaped or more preferably C-shaped as in Figure 3 - section. The opposed free edges 3 of the channel member 2 are provided with a plurality of generally equally spaced cut outs 4 to provide grooves extending transversely of the channel member 2.
One side wall 5 of the channel member 2 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending spaced apart slots 6 used to secured respective ends 7, 8 of retaining straps 9 which are detachably securable to the other side wall 25 by known means (see below with reference to Figure 2) which serve to retain the handles H of one or more carrier bags received in the central longitudinally extending groove 10 defined by the inside wall 11 of the channel member 2, together and in engagement with the carrying aid, or of a wrist loop 19.
The wrist loop 19 is of a flexible material which may be elastically stretchable and which may be permanently closed or provided at free ends 13 thereof with releasable fastening means e.g. pressstud ortouch-and-closetype hook and loop type fastening means 14 such as those available from the Velcro (R.T.M.) company.
In Figure 2 the carrying aid has on the outside of each side wall 5, 25 a small knob 30 which is releasably engaged in a keyhole aperture 31 in a respective end 32, 33 of a retaining strap 29 extending therebetween for securely but releasably retaining a plurality of carrier bag handles Htogether within the main channel of the carrying aid.
Figure 3 shows a channel member 2 in which the bottom 15 of the groove 10 is ridged 16. Also the side walls 5 are formed to be easily but resiliently deformable to facilitate loading of the bag handles H into the longitudinal groove 10 whilst retaining the opposed free edges 3 relatively close together during carrying to reduce the possibility of escape of the handles H.
Figure 4 shows the aid 1 in use when carrying a string-tied parcel P with a transverse string run 17 located in a central transverse groove 4 of the aid 1, and Figure 5 shows the aid 1 being used to carry a pane of glass G.
The aid may be of any rigid or semi-rigid material but is conveniently made of a plastics material preferably a resiliently deformable one, for example, polyamide, polyethylene or polypropylene, or polyvinylchloride.
1. A carrying aid (1) suitable for use in carrying string tied parcels (P) or polythene carrier bags (H) which aid (1) comprises a channel member (2) having a generally rounded section and a length corresponding generally to or slightly greater than an average palm width, characterized in that said channel member (2) has at least one transverse groove (4) extending across the opposed free edges (3) of the channel member (2) intermediate the longitudinal ends (10, 11 ) thereof.
2. A carrying aid according to claim 1 wherein is provided a plurality of spaced apart transverse grooves (4) extending across said opposed free edges (3) of said channel member (2) between the longitudinal ends (10,11).
3. A carrying aid according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said channel member (2) is generally C- or U-shaped in transverse crossection.
