Description

Feb. 28, 1967 G. c. WILSON 3,306,507
CARRYI NG HANDLE 5 Filed Sept. 20, 1965 fiweflZar: 676/216 C 015014 United States Patent 3,306,507 CARRYING HANDLES Glenn C. Wilson, 320 N. Euclid Ave., Oak Park, II]. 60302 Filed Sept. 20, 1965, Ser. No. 488,592 1 Claim. (Cl. 224-45) My invention relates to carrying handles for shopping bags, and more particularly to the carrying handle covered in my Patent No. 3,207,397, to be issued on September 21, 1965. In the patented handle, two undercut passages occur near the ends terminating with pockets in which the hand straps of a shopping bag may be suspended, the handle providing a comfortable hold in this manner for the support and transportation of the shopping bag.
Some packages, such as beverage bottle cartons, packages tied with string, and paint cans with carrying bails, are not adapted for support by the handle in my patent, but can receive suspended support from a pair of hooks. It is accordingly one object of the present invention to supplement the handle covered in my aforesaid patent with a pair of hooks for the convenient support and transportation of the articles mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph.
A further object is to provide a pair of hooks whose head portions are receivable in the undercut passages mentioned above to seat in the pockets and hang from the handle in readiness to suspend any of the articles mentioned.
Another object is to provide hooks of the character mentioned which are light, very simple in construction, and of a nature to be produced at nominal cost by machine methods.
A better understanding of the invention may begained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the handle treated in my aforesaid patent, showing a pair of the hooks suspended therefrom;
FIG. 2 is an end view of the showing in FIG. 1; and
FIGS. 3 to 5 are, respectively, perspective views showing the application of the hooks to a bottle carton, a string-tied package, and a paint can.
Referring specifically to the drawing, denotes the carrying handle shown in my patent, such handle being of plastic material with a rounded bottom 10a for comfortable support in the hand. Near each end the handle has an entrance 10b into an S-shaped passage 100 which leads into a bottom pocket 10d.
The passages 100, While retentive in respect to the supporting straps of a shopping bag, are equally retentive when the head portions 12a of a pair of pendent hooks 12 are trained into the passages to seat in the pockets 16d as shown. In this event the head portions fully wrap around the handle bottom 10a as seen in FIG. 5, becoming locked against lateral or endwise deviation, particularly when a weighted carton or package is suspended from the books. The said head portions are preferably triangular, but may be circular or of any other suitable form. The hooks 12 are bent up with bills 12b at the bottom, these being in the same plane as the head portions, and pointing in the same direction. Also, the entrances to the bills are flared and then constricted, as shown at 12c and 12d, respectively, in FIG. 2. They are thus tensioned momentarily when receiving the handle 13 of a bottle carton 13, the top portions 14a of a package tie string 14, or the bail 15a of a paint can 15, as shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
It will now be apparent that the attachment of the hooks extends the use of the carrying handle to articles other than shopping bags, to enable such other articles to be carried with balance and comfort. The lightness and compactness of the hooks enable them to be taken along with the carrying handle in a purse or pocket for immediate use during miscellaneous shopping or whenever desired. Finally, the hooks are of a nature to be formed by machine methods and therefore to be available at nominal cost.
I claim:
The combination with a carrying handle having terminal receptacles, each with a top entrance, an outward channel continued from the entrance, and a downward pocket continued from the channel; of a pair of books suspended from the carrying handle, each hook having a looped head portion locked in engagement with the handle by threading through the related entrance and channel to seat in said pocket and wrap around the bottom of the handle.
