Abstract
221,759. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Pitt Railway Equipments, Ltd.). April 28, 1924. Reversing-gearing; securing wheels on shafts.-Gearing especially for driving electric generators such as 37 on railway vehicles drives a shaft 35 always in one direction whichever way the vehicle axle 54, which supplies the motion, may be running. In the arrangement described in Specification 194,992, a main helical wheel such as 52 on the axle is adapted to drive a single clutch-ended pinion, which is thrust axially on reversal of drive between two clutch-ended bevel gears such as 44, 45 so as to drive a middle gear 36 in one direction. In this invention, there are two helical pinions 46, 47 slidably splined on an intermediate shaft 11 with a stop 12 on the shaft between them. These pinions have clutch ends 49, 48, and are operative alternatively one for each direction of motion of the vehicle. The shaft 11, Fig. 2, is supported at a relatively low level in a casing 31, which has a depression 15 forming an oil bath. Recesses 68 are formed in the end of the casing which catch oil carried up by the wheel 52 and allow it to drain back to the bath 15. The wheel 52 may be mounted on an ordinary axle 54 by securing it to split sleeves 53, 53a, Fig. 1, the ends of which are clamped by split collars 55, Fig. 5. Taper keys 57 are recessed into the collars and bear on the axle. The collars are secured to the sleeves by studs 59.
