Bore-hole apparatus. - Pipes are laid without previous excavation by passing water under pressure through a plunger and the pipes to wash away and soften the soil in front of them, the water simultaneously acting on the plunger to press the pipes longitudinally into the soil. A hydraulic cylinder 1, with direction-sighting means, contains a plunger 10 with a neck 9; a pipe 2, provided with a nozzle 6, is engaged with the neck 9 and guided in a divided front cover 7. Water admitted through a pipe 11 passes through the pipe 2 and nozzle 6 to wash away and soften the soil and also acts on the plunger to force the pipe forwardly; a further pipe 2 is then placed between the plunger 10 and the first pipe and the operation is repeated. During this operation, the pipes may be rotated by hand or by mechanical means. Water may be admitted through a pipe 13 to the front of the cylinder 1 to control the advance of. or to return, the pipes. Pipes not adapted to withstand longitudinal pressure may be enclosed in metal pipes which are then driven as above; the metal pipes are then withdrawn, and during such withdrawal the inner pipes are forced out of the metal pipes by the use of a small pipe between the rear of the inner pipes and the rear cover of the cylinder 1.
