Electric plant.-In a main and tail haulage system using an alternating-current power supply, an auxiliary induction motor is driven by the loose tail drum to retard the paying-out of the tail rope, and is geared to be revolved at an oversynchronous speed so that it can be connected to the supply mains to regenerate into them the energy lost in braking the loose tail drum. In the illustrated system the drums 5, 6 act alternately as the loose tail drums, the drum 6 being shown functioning in that capacity. The drum 5 is driven from the main motor 2 through the clutch 7 while the tail drum drives the auxiliary motor 9 through the chain gear 12 and clutch 14. The changing over of the clutches 7, 8 effects a corresponding change in the clutches 14, 18. The main controller 16 in the " off " and adjacent positions controls the main motor only, while in the " running " or full speed " positions it also connects the motor 9 to the mains 24. A series of " full speed " studs are provided which allow the auxiliary motor to be controlled without affecting the main motor. The auxiliary motor may be controlled to vary the braking effect by varying the rotor current, the field strength, or the field velocity or by any combination of these methods.
