Abstract

1449442 Helicopter haul-down system DOMINION ALUMINIUM FABRICATING Ltd 10 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5623/75 Heading B7G [Also in Division B8] A helicopter recovery system has a haul-down cable 12 for detachably connecting to a helicopter during a landing operation, a winch drum 16 for reeling in the cable, and a constant speed electric motor 17 and eddy-current clutch 18 for applying a torque to the winch drum. The clutch has an inductor drum (21), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), driven by the motor, an independently rotatable rotor (22) connected to drive the winch drum, and a field coil (23) for magnetically coupling the inductor drum and rotor. Energizing current supplied to the field coil is controlled both manually and by means of a cable-tension sensor 33 or a sensor of the rotational speed of the winch drum. The winch drum has a decreasing diameter at that portion (38), Fig. 5 (not shown), of the drum which corresponds to haul down reel-in just prior to helicopter touch-down, so that the restraining tension in the cable is increased to secure the helicopter to the deck.
