Abstract
218,450. Killen, E. B. May 25, 1923. Non-metallic elastic bodies and cores; rims; detachable-rim attachments to wheels.-Relates to cushion tyres of the kind described in Specifications 1646/11, 4929/13, and 137,942 in which the side-walls 12, 13 are constructed' to flow into the air-space 2 under load. The side walls are now vulcanized to a one-piece metal foundationband 1 with spaced central portions 15 so that the space 2 is rendered airtight when the tyre is pressed on to the wheel 3. The connecting- pieces 15, which are formed with or integrally secured to the edge portions of the base 1 are of substantial length relative to the intervening spaces so as to give rigidity to the band. The bases of the side-walls may be extended laterally in one or both directions so as to increase the area of the rubber-to-metal joints. When fitted to relatively narrow wheels, the overhanging portions of the band 1 may be formed with grooves 16, 17 to receive locking segments or split rings 4, 5 which are detachably secured by transverse bolts 18.
