Abstract

A starter device comprises a support casing 1, a translatable pinion 6 arranged to engage teeth on the flywheel 7 of an internal combustion engine, an operating electromagnet 3, a flexible transmission lever 8 having its ends coupled to the armature 3a of the electromagnet 3 and to a movable member 5 for driving the pinion 6 in translation, the lever 8 extending through a slot 9a in an articulation pin 9 rotatably supported within the casing 1 and an electric motor 2 for rotating the pinion 6. To keep the transmission lever 8 in position, the articulation pin 9 has retaining means for preventing the lever from moving away from the member 5 for driving the pinion. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Starter device for internal combustion engines for motor vehicles This invention relates to a starterdevicefor an in ternal combustion engine for a motorvehicle.
In particular, the invention has for its subject a starter device of the type comprising a support casing, a translatable pinion arranged to engage a set ofteeth on the flywheel of an internal combustion engine, an operating electromagnet, a flexible transmission lever having its ends coupled to the armature ofthe electromagnet and to a movable memberfor driving the translation ofthe pinion, respectively, the lever extending through a slot in an articulation pin rotatably supported within the casing, and an electric motorfor rotating the pinion.
An object ofthe present invention is to provide the starter device of the aforesaid type which is able to ensurethatthetransmission lever is kept in its position safely and reliably.
According to the invention this object is achieved in a starter device ofthetypespecified above by virtue ofthefactthatthe articulation pin has retaining meansforpreventingthe leverfrom moving away from the member for driving the translation ofthe pinion.
In one particular embodiment, in which the drive member is essentially in the form of a sleevetranslatable on the shaft of the electric motor and in which the transmission lever comprises two substantially Y-shaped metal blades with a forked end forming two arms for engaging and causing the translation of the sleevewhen the electromagnet is energised, the retaining means according to the invention include two stop members carried bythe articulation pin adjacent the end sides or edges ofthe slot on its part facing the sleeve; the distance between the stop members being such that they can interfere with the outer side edges ofthe forked portion ofthe transmission lever to prevent its movement away from the sleeve.
The retaining means include, as will be apparent below, an annular retaining and guide membercarried bythe pin infrontoftheslotandtraversed bythe transmission lever; two opposite side portions ofthe annular retaining and guide member constituting the stop members.
The annular retaining and guide member is preferably of squashed rectangular form and is connected to the articulation pin by two integral connecting arms.
Further characteristics of the device according to the invention will become apparent from the detailed description which follows with reference to the accompanying drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which: Figure lisa partially sectioned side view of a star- terdeviceforan internal combustion engine, made in accordance with the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view taken on the arrow II of Figure 1, showing in detail the double-leaf-spring transmission lever and its articulation pin of the present invention, and Figure 3is an exploded perspective view of part of the device shown in Figure 2.
With reference to Figure 1, a starter device for an internal combustionengineformotorvehiclesinclu des a support casing 1 which houses, in a known arrangement, an electric operating motor 2 and an electromagnet3. In the arrangement illustrated, the shaft 2a of the motor2 and the movable armature 3a of the electromagnet 3 are parallel to each other.
The shaft 2a has screw-threading of long pitch on which the input part 4a of a free-wheel coupling 4 is rotatably and translatably mounted. A sleeve 5 is translatable with the input part4a ofthe coupling 4.
On the opposite side from the motor 2, this coupling is connected to a pinion 6which is axiallytranslatable along a smooth end portion ofthe shaft 2a ofthe electric motor 2. In particular, the pinion 6 istranslatable between a withdrawn rest position, shown in full outline in Figure 1, and an advanced working position, shown in broken outline in this figure. In the latter position, the pinion 6 can engage with the teeth of the flywheel 7 ofthe internal combustion engine.
Aso-calleddouble-leaf-spring lever8actsasa transmission member between the armature 3a of the electromagnet 3 and the sleeve 5 which acts as a drive memberforthetranslation ofthe pinion 6. In known manner, the double-leaf-spring lever 8 inclu des two coupled metal blades of substantially Y- shape with one end forked to form two arms 8a which engage in suitable seats 5a arranged in the sides of the sleeve 5 and its other end Sb engaged in a slot in the end portion of the armature 3a of the electromagnet 3.
The double-leaf-spring lever8extendsthroughthe slot 9a of an articulation pin 9 (Figure 3) rotatable between the two arms of a support 10 fixed to the casing 1 ofthestarterdevice.
An annular retaining and guide member 11 of squashed rectangularform is carried by the articulation pin 9 in front ofthe slot9a on the side facing the sleeve 5. The double lever 8 extends through the guide and retaining member 11 and the two smaller lateral portions 11 a ofthe latter interfere with the outer lateral edges of the forked portion of the double leverto prevent it from moving away from the sleeve 5. The retaining and guide member 11 is joined to the articulation pin 9 by two connecting arms or parts 12.
Preferably, the pin 9, the guide and retaining member 11, and the connecting parts 12 are formed in a single piece, for example of plastics material.
In the assembled condition, the doubletransmission lever8 is securely and reliably held in position; the sleeve 5 stops it on the side ofthe arms 8a, while the guide and retaining member 11 carried by the articulation pin 9 prevents its movement away from the sleeve.
