Frictional machines. -Sheets are separated from piles and fed to machines bv the combined action of air blasts on the edges of the sheets and of rods charged w i t h static electricity which are moved from contact with rubbing members into proximity to or contact with the sheets to be fed. As applied to a machine for feeding manifold sheets from piles on tables 17, four sets of similar rods 1 are charged with electricity while in contact with rollers 2 driven by gearing from an upper pulley 8. The rods 1 are formed of glass cores covered with sulphur, ebonite, or alternate sections of sulphur and ebonite, or the rods may be formed of hollow ebonite, or of ebonite tubes with metal cores, an air space being left between the ebonite and metal. The rollers 2 are covered with felt or the like. Earthed metal members 32, Fig. 5, adjustable about rods 9<c>, can be used to regulate the charge on the rollers 1. The rollers 2 may be electrically heated and are mounted on levers 3 connected by a link 4, which can be reciprocated by a crank 5 on a shaft 6 to raise the rollers out of contact with the rods 1. The rods 1 are simultaneously lowered on to the piles by links 8 connected to levers 9 in which the rods 1 are mounted. The levers 9 carry rods 9<c> which press on the piles and limit the positions of the rods 1 which may thus be prevented from actual contact with the piles.
