Lids and covers.-In top feed furnace covers adapted to be both raised (or lowered) and moved along, the axles B loosely carrying the supporting wheels C pass through vertical slots in lugs A<1> provided at each corner of the cover A and are furnished with cams b co-operating with extensions on the lugs. The axles are connected together by cranks and link C<1>, and one of them is provided with a crank connected to a rack D. By rotation of a pinion d<1> the cover is thus first raised owing to quarter rotation of the axles and is then moved along the rails B<2>. In a modification, cranks on the axles are attached to an endless chain to effect the raising and travelling motions of the cover. Hydraulic or pneumatic rams are also suggested for operating the cranks.
