Abstract

In the recovery of fats from wool-washing waters by adding calcium chloride or hydrochloric acid and excess of lime and extracting the precipitate with acetone by adding calcium chloride or hydrochloric acid and excess of lime and extracting the precipitate with acetone, boiling acetone is used, and the extracted wool-fat is isolated from the solvent and extracted lime and lime soap by distilling off the acetone, treating with soda solution, and centrifuging or adding alcohol. Prior to the extraction with acetone the precipitate may be treated with steam to extract free fat. The matter undissolved by the acetone is treated with hydrochloric acid to liberate the fatty acids and produce calcium chloride. Or this matter, with or without the soluble soaps separated from the extract, is subjected to a current of superheated steam, e.g. at 180-280 DEG C. to hydrolyze the soaps. The basic residue may be used as a fertilizer.
