Abstract
The antirachitic principle of oils is extracted by saponifying the oil with alcoholic caustic alkali, e.g. caustic soda, dissolving the product in water and extracting the unsaponified part with a solvent such as ether: the ether extract is dissolved in alcohol, boiled with charcoal to decolorize it, and evaporated to crystallize out the cholesterol; the remainder contains the antirachitic principle. The invention relates particularly to the treatment of cod-liver oil, but is applicable also to the extraction of the antirachitic principle from other fish-liver oils as well as fish oils and other oils. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the precipitation of the fatty acids from the ether extract by acidification, followed by their resaponification and extraction with ether. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
