Baffles in water space; water-circulation, apparatus for promoting.-In a mater-tube boiler having a steam drum 1 and a mud drum 2 connected by pipes 3, and two banks of tubes, the tubes of the upper bank 5 are greater in number or diameter than those of the lower bank 4, and the connection between their adjacent ends has a cross-sectional area transversely of the flow equal to that of the sum of the tubes in the upper bank, and throughout is at least equal to that of the sum of the tubes in the lower bank. The tubes enter a drum 6 in which detachable partitions 7, 8, 9 form passages between the two banks, openings in the partition 9, ensuring that the drum 6 connected to the steam drum by a pipe 10 be full of water. In a modification single tubes are connected by tapering elbows, or a flanged casting 18, Fig. 7, containing passages 19 is employed. A plate 21, Fig. 11, having cowled openings 22 is placed over the tube openings in the mud drum. A feed-water drum 14 may be placed between the banks and a propeller for water circulation may be placed in the pipes 3.
