Abstract

In a cyclic process for the extraction of copper, the copper sulphate obtained from the copper-bearing material is treated in presence of sulphurous acid with a mixture of sulphuric and hydriodic acids obtained by treating iodine with sulphurous acid. Cuprous iodide and sulphuric acid are obtained. The cuprous iodide may be treated with a solution of sodium carbonate or hydrate to obtain sodium iodide which is heated with an oxidizing agent such as manganese dioxide to liberate iodine. The sodium manganate thus obtained is treated with water to obtain manganic oxide and sodium hydrate.ALSO:Copper-bearing material is treated with sulphuric acid to obtain a solution of copper sulphate from which any silver may be precipitated as chloride and removed. The solution is treated in presence of sulphur dioxide in excess, with a mixture of sulphuric and hydriodic acids obtained by reacting upon iodine with sulphur dioxide and water. The cuprous iodide is separated, leaving sulphuric acid which is used to treat the copper-bearing material as above described the process being cyclic. The cuprous iodide is heated in presence of oxygen or copper oxide or both to obtain iodine and cupric or cuprous oxide, or is treated with solution of sodium carbonate or hydrate to obtain cuprous oxide and sodium iodide. The sodium iodide is heated with an oxidizing agent such as manganese dioxide to obtain iodine, the manganate being then decomposed by water to obtain caustic soda and manganic oxide which may be reconverted into the dioxide in known manner.
