Abstract

25,574. Holdsworth, A. Nov. 13. Cadmium, copper, lead, silver, zinc, &c. salts; copper, iron, lead, zinc, &c. oxides -Poor or other sulphide ores are heated with sulphuric acid in the proportion of one molecule of acid to one atom of sulphur in the ore, but more acid may be used if carbonates &c. are present. Sulphur trioxide and dioxide are evolved, some of the dioxide being oxidized by contact with the ferric oxide produced by the heating. The sulphur oxides may be converted into sulphuric acid, or may be passed over the ore before it is treated with acid. In an example, the heating is continued until the sulphates of iron and copper are decomposed ; silver sulphate is obtained on lixiviation, and the copper is then dissolved from the residue by means of dilute sulphuric acid. If the above proportion of acid is not enough to wet all the ore, water may be added ; while if the acid would produce a too liquid mixture, it may be added part at a time, heating if necessary. The process is specially suitable for poor or refractory zinc ores, a solution containing all the zinc, cadmium, and silver as sulphates being obtained, while iron, copper, lead, &c. remain as insoluble oxides or sulphates.
