Pulverulent-fuel furnaces.-In a furnace burning coal dust, the cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber a taken at right-angles to the path g of the flame from the burner b varies in accordance with the volume of the combustion products. As shown in the Figure, the cross section of the combustion chamber first increases, then remains constant for a short distance along the path of the gases and subsequently decreases. The arch c is inclined upwardly in a direction parallel with the path of the gases and may be straight or curved. Air for combustion is admitted to the arch through openings e, the air being heated and the arch cooled. The position of the ignition zone and the zone of highest temperature may be varied by varying the temperature of the arch. This is effected by varying the passage of the cooling medium or by varying the velocity of flow thereof. Specifications 201,147 and 206,044 are referred to.
