Abstract

212,227. Wingquist, S. G. Jan. 17, 1924. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; boxes combined with ball or roller bearings-In packing for relatively rotating bodies of the type in which flexibly-supported discs 8, 9 on one part engage between discs 5, 4 on the other part, the flexible support 11, which may be a corrugated metal diaphragm, is secured to the discs 8, 9 near their inner periphery, in order that the areas of the diaphragm and of the discs exposed to fluid pressure may be substantially equal. The rubbing faces of the discs may be grooved, as shown at 2. The discs are secured to sleeves 1, 14, the discs 5, 4 being spaced by a ring 3 and secured against a flange 6 by riveting over the end 7 of the sleeve, or otherwise. The diaphragm is similarly secured by a ring 13 and the rivetedover end of the sleeve 14.. Alternatively, the flexibly-supported discs may be carried by the sleeve 1 and the packing may be multiple. The sleeves 1 and 14 may be formed with grooves such as 15 to contain packing and may be combined with ball or roller bearings. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 206,806.
