Abstract
211,162. Soc. Anon. la Cellophane. Feb. 12, 1923, [Convention date]. Drying materials in long lengths.-A process of drying celluloid and like. films particularly those produced from aqueous solutions of cellulose, consists in passing the films over a series of spaced rolls which serve to support and guide the films without exerting pressure thereon, the amount of shrinkage of the films being predetermined by the spacing of the rolls, which are arranged within a heated chamber and may be heated internally. The film 5, Fig. 1, passes from a roll or direct from the film-producing machine over superposed rolls, which are spaced apart by means of changeable rings 2, 4, Fig. 5, and thence to a rotary receiving roll. The lower rolls are rotated through a pulley drive and countershafts 9 from a shaft 8, each pair of rolls being driven from a single countershaft, and the upper rolls are frictionally driven through the rings from the lower rolls. The pulley belts are adapted to slip to adjust the speed of the lower rolls to compensate for shrinkage of the film. After a part of the film has been wound upon the receiving roll the pulley drive can be disengaged from the lower roll by a clutch. The lower rolls may be heated internally by a fluid introduced through pipes 15 from a main 14.
