Abstract

210,805. Knight, C. Y. Feb. 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Pistons, balancing laterally.-In order to prevent piston slap, a portion or portions of the piston are pressed laterally by the oscillatory movements of the small end of the connecting- rod at the dead points. The connecting-rod may be formed with a cam surface acting at the dead points on a cam 32, Fig. 2, on an arch 31 connecting the thrust faces of the piston, thus pressing the latter laterally. Cuts 28, 30 may be made in the thrust faces. Alternatively, an arm 46, Fig. 8, on the connecting-rod may be pinned to a rod 44 in a socket in a shoe 19 located in a slot in the piston skirt; or the connecting-rod may be connected by a link to a tongue formed by slots in the skirt. In another arrangement, a single arm or two arms 70, 68, Fig. 14, on the connecting-rod carry rollers 74, 72 which project through slots in the skirt.
