Guarding against unauthorized use.-A brake or locking-device for the front wheels of cycles &c. of the kind consisting of a buffercarrying rod housed in the steering-stem, comprises a rod a, housed to receive telescopically a rod b of smaller diameter, and screw-threaded at its upper end to engage in a screwed socket c fixed to the machine by a gland nut d. The rod carries a buffer e and is turned to apply this buffer to the wheel by the use of a key fitted over a squared end a<2>. A bolt h, disposed in a transverse passage in the part a, is also housed to receive and clamp the part b. The buffer e may be rotatable.
