Abstract

The fastening of an auxiliary wheel (5) to a vehicle wheel (2), e.g. the rear wheel of a tractor, is accomplished by fastening member(s) which engage in a groove (4) formed by a turned-over edge of a rim flange of the wheel (2). In the Fig. 1 embodiment the edges (9) of a two-part band (6) are urged into adjacent grooves (4) in both wheels (2), (5) by means of screw and latch mechanisms connecting respective ends of the band parts to each other. Alternatively fastening may be effected by circumferentially spaced members carried on radial arms displaceable by a screw mechanism to urge the members into grooves (4) in both wheels (2) (5). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Double wheel fastening This invention relates to means for fastening a double wheel on the side of the wheel proper, particularly in connection with the wheels of agricultural tractors, where the felloe of the wheel is so constructed that the edge of the felloe doubles inwards constituting a groove which is open towards the axis of the felloe.
In constructions known in the prior art, the fastening of a double wheel is accomplished with the aid of various means in connection with the double wheel to fastening members specificially mounted on the tractor wheel felloes. This kind of construction requiring special parts also on the tractor wheel side is complicated and costly. The present invention aims to provide a simple and less costly construction which in addition meets all of the functional requirements imposed on a means of this kind.
According to the invention, there is provided means for fastening a double wheel on the side of a wheel proper, particularly in connection with wheels of agricultural tractors, the wheel having a felloe in which the edge doubles inwards to constitute a groove open towards the axis of the felloe, wherein the fastening of the double wheel is accomplished by the aid of at least one fastening member entering said groove.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional view of one embodiment of a wheel fastening means according to the invention which is based on a felloe joining a tractor wheel and a fellow wheel; Figure 2 is a side elevation of one embodiment of a joining fellow used in the embodiment of the wheel fastening means shown in Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of an alternative embodiment of joining felloe; Figure 4 is a diagrammatic sectional view of a second embodiment of a wheel fastening means according to the invention in which radially outward projecting parts connect the wheel felloes to each other; Figure 5 is a side elevation of the projecting parts shown in Fig. 4;; Figure 6 is a diagrammatic sectional view of a third embodiment of a wheel fastening means according to the invention in which fastening members are attached to the felloe of the double wheel; and Figure 7 is a side elevation of the fastening members shown in Fig. 6.
In the drawings, like parts are denoted by like reference numerals.
Reference will first be made to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings in which a solid wheel 2 is mounted on the rear axle 1 of a tractor. A felloe 3 is provided with marginal grooves 4.
The double wheel has a similar felloe 5 and these felloes are interconnected by means of a joining felloe 6. In the illustrated example, this felloe consists of two parts which are distanced from each other by means of a latch mechanism 7 and a screw mechanism 8. The felloe 6 may alternatively consist of one, three or more parts. The felloe 6 has outward turned edges 9 which are, by means of the latch and screw mechanism, urged against the bottoms of the grooves 4.
In case the wheel felloes are of different size, a joining felloe with correspondingly different sized projecting margins 9 is employed.
The felloe 6 may also be made angular as shown in Fig. 3, whereby it is easier to install on wheel felloes the marginal grooves of which present flat portions caused by bumps.
The construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 comprises a plurality of joining members 10 and there are pushed radially against the bottoms of the grooves 4 in the wheel felloes by means of a separate tightening mechanism. This mechanism consists of arms 11 and 1 2 pivotally attached to the joining members 10, of plates 1 3 and 14 connecting the other ends of said arms and of a screw 15, by which the plates 1 3 and 14 can be moved towards or away from each other.
When the double wheel is fastened to the traction wheel, the plates 1 3 and 14 are moved apart whereby the arms 11 and 1 2 pull the joining members 10 towards the central axis, and the connection piece can be fitted between the tractor wheel and the double wheel. On tightening the screw 15, the joining pieces 10 move away from the central axis and enter the grooves 4, implementing the juncture.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 6 and 7, there has been attached to the double wheel with the aid of screws 16, a frame plate 17, to which is affixed a tightening screw 1 8 which supports a connecting plate 1 9. Arms 20 supporting the joining pieces 10 are pivotally attached to the connecting plate 1 9.
Connection is accomplished by making the arms 20 push the joining pieces 10 into the marginal grooves 4 of the felloes.
The invention is not restricted to the abovedescribed embodiments but variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
