MARCELLUS REID, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DISK WHEEL.
Application led January 7,l 1921. Serial No. 485,2663.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAncELLUs Rnrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Disk Wheels, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to metal wheels and more particularly to a sheet metal disk wheel and is in the nature of an improvement upon or modification of the disk wheel disclosed in my application Serial No. 409,651; the object being to modify and simplify the construction of the disk of the wheel body and also the central supporting member carried by the hub, and which in turn sustains the load placed upon the wheel.
'Another object is to eliminate certain parts and thereby reduce weight without sacrificing any of the strength or durability of the wheel as a whole.
Another object is to materially reduce the cost of production.
With these various objects in view, the invention consists in the various details of construction and in the manner of combining or arranging them, al1 of which will be more fully described hereafter and set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Fig. 1 is a `vertical sectional view of a rear wheel constructed in accordance with' my improvements and Fi 2 is a similar view of a front wheel em odying the invention.
In the practical embodiment of this invention, I employ the usual or standard type of hub 10, having the hub flange 11 and barrel ortion 12.
The ub has arranged thereon a central supporting member which is constructed with an inturned flange 13 which lits upon the barrel portion of hub, upon the inner or rear side ofthe hub flange, and in the rear wheel construction this flange 13 constitutes a part of the brake drum 14, while in the front wheel structure it is a part of the central supporting member 15.
The brake drum has its outer edge rounded or curved as shown at 16, while the central supporting member has its outer portion curved inwardly or rearwardly as indicated at 17. l
The outer faces of the brake drum 14' and hub flanges, an
member 15 are arallel with their respective fitting between these faces and flanges in each construction, is the central portion 18 of the disk of the wheel body, said central portion being securely connected to the hub flange and central support by means of bolts or rivets 19, or both as preferred.
The disk is curved inwardly or rearwardly a sufficient distance to engage and overlap the curved edge of the brake drum 14 or the curved edge of the central supporting member 15, and then the disk is curved outwardly towards the periphery, which is shaped into a fixed rim to receive a tire carrying rim, and provide-dl with means to detachably connect said rirr-4 to the wheel body. The inward curve of the disk which engages the central member is indicated at 20.
The fixed rim, demountable rim, and fastoning means are the same as disclosed in my application Serial No. 409,652, and form no part of the present improvement, as the central structure is applicable lto all styles of fellies and rims.
It will be noted that the inner edge of the disk of wheel bod does not contact with the barrel of the hub but stops short of the same, and a given size of central opening in the disk can be used upon a number of different sized hubs within certain limits.
The flanges of the central supporting members, however, do bear directly upon the barrel ofthe hub, and provide a broad bearing to receive and carry the load placed on the wheel, this load being applied to the central members, by thecurved or overlapping portion 20 of the disk, and this curve in the disk engaging as it does the curved outer edge of the cen-tral supporting member relieves the bolts and rivets of all shearing strains.
It will thus be seen that I provide an improved form of disk usable in combination with a novel form of central member thereby providing a cheap and simple wheel, capable of carrying great loads and withstanding severe lateral strains in either direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a hub having a barrel portion and a radial ange, of a central sup orting member having an inwardly turned ange at its inner edge resting upon the barrel portion of-he hub, `the outer portion of said member being curved inwardly end a, disk having its inner portion arranged between the central member and the hub e lange and connected to seid Honge and member, said disk being curved inwardly to Contact with the inwardly curved portion of the centrel supporting member and then curved outwardly and e rim connected to the outer edge of seid'vdisk. il@
lin testlmony whereof, ll hereunto ox my signature.
